About GhostFest

For over 20 years, GhostFest has entertained patrons with epic scares and our family day which happens the last Saturday of the event.  Our family day features vendors, food, and a kid zone before the doors of our Haunted House opens.  Our actors put their heart and soul into creating a creative, interactive experience you won’t soon forget.  Over time, Ghost Fest has grown to be one of the largest haunted attractions on Florida’s West Coast.  GhostFest is the largest fundraiser for the museum. Proceeds go to help maintain the property and repair the Stringer and their two other museums.

Our event takes place at the legendary and historic May-Stringer House, operated by the HHMA (Hernando Historical Museum Association) a 501(c)(3) organization.  This location makes for the perfect haunted attraction because it’s been deemed “the most haunted house in Florida”.  For years independent ghost investigation groups have come to the May-Stringer to investigate.  We also had Kindred Spirits record an episode in 2020.

The May-Stringer Museum

The May-Stringer House was built in 1856 by John May for his wife and two daughters.  In 1866 shortly after the civil war, it was the residence of Frank Saxon who married Marena May.  The Saxon name is very prominent throughout Brooksville for his involvement in the local government, and his participation in securing the 20,000.00 bond that built the 1885 Train Depot.  The Saxons lived in this house until the late 1880s and maybe early 1890s when they moved the the Saxon Mannor, located two blocks down from the Stringer.  He and his Wife Tulula Hope lived there until their passing.  The Hope family is another pioneer family to Brooksville.  In 1903, Dr. Stringer and his wife purchased the house under Mrs. Stringer’s name.  Dr. Stringer sadly passed three weeks after moving in.  The Stringers lived there the longest, Judge Fred Stringer was the longest living resident in the house.

The house is a historic museum that keeps Brooksville’s history alive.  They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM for guided tours.  The last tour is at 2:00 PM.  They operate off 100% volunteer participation.
